letter to WASHINGTON POST Dear Washington Post, “As an ex-president, Trump could disclose the secrets he learned while in office, current and former officials fear”—so reads one of today's headlines of your online newspaper. Your revelation that President Trump just might make use of his secrets to blow us all up (yes, even us Canadians, since your article makes it very clear that his vengeful spirit knows no bounds) has scared the bejeezus out of me, and I suspect out of countless other readers of yours. Your newspaper (and by no means just your newspaper) has warned us countless times in the past several years of the unbalanced and vengeful nature of your president, and in doing so has contributed an awful lot to his final ousting. Wasn't that terribly irresponsible of you, knowing, as all along you obviously did, that Trump just might behave in this apocalyptic way once out of office? Sentirsi italiani e friulani

Ciao, Erick. Piacevole sorpresa di sentirti. Noi stiamo sempre bene, e speriamo che continui così, specie in questi giorni dominati dal Covid 19. Speriamo che pure tu stia bene, principalmente in salute. In quanto ai tuoi pensieri e preoccupazioni sugli italiani e sull'Italia, nonchè sui friulani e sul Friuli, posso solo farti qualche piccola osservazione personale: Non sono al corrente dei programmi Netflix ai quali tu accenni. Non mi è, però, difficile immaginare che gli italiani siano rappresentati con i soliti prototipi di gente povera, di cultura inferiore a quella di altri gruppi etnici, in particolare anglosassoni; di gente che, se può, se ne infischia della legge, e che diffatti se eccelle in qualcosa, di solito eccelle in attività fuorilegge, ecc. È raro purtroppo che programmi Netflix (o programmi televisivi in generale) si soffermino a osservare che noi, come italiani, siamo eredi di una cultura che dovrebbe essere, e in alcuni casi è, l'invidia di tante altre nazioni, inclusa quella canadese. L'Italia non è più quella che era in tempi passati, quando dominava gran parte del mondo (come ai tempi dell' impero romano, o quando dominava il mondo commerciale (come faceva ai tempi della Firenze rinascimentale). Questo dominio appartiene ora a potenze molto più grandi dell'Italia, come il Giappone, come la Germania, come la Cina e gli Stati Uniti. Lo stesso, nessuno ci toglie (o almeno nessuno toglie a me) di sentirci orgogliosissimi di appartenere a una cultura che ha offerto al mondo un San Francesco, un Dante, un Petrarca, un Boccaccio, un Giotto, un Bernini, un Da Vinci, un Galileo, un Michelangelo, un Verdi, un Puccini, un Foscolo, un Manzoni, un Garibaldi, un Fermi, un Pavarotti, ecc. Sono rare le nazioni che hanno offerto all'umanità un numero così vasto di scrittori, artisti, e scienziati illustri. Se Netflix, ecc., continua a rappresentarci come gente incolta è per pura ignoranza da parte sua. Noi friulani non siamo, direttamente, eredi di queste grandi personalità. Ci sono, però, delle eccezioni, come nel caso del grande Pasolini. Siamo, comunque, italiani, e come italiani abbiamo il diritto di vantarci di ciò che appartiene a ogni italiano. Noi friulani possiamo vantarci pure di altre cose: abbiamo, molti di noi, radici umili, ma siamo dei grandi e affidabili lavoratori; possediamo, inoltre, una lingua tutta nostra—il friulano. Io, da molti anni, come lo sai, appoggio nelle mie traduzioni il friulano occidentale. Ciò non vul dire che io sia contro il friulano ritenuto il friulano comune. Vuole solo dire che con le mie traduzioni io celebro la varietà e ricchezza della lingua di tutti i friulani. Ciao, Erick—e tenti cont! Ermes
